Credit: Getty Images/Eduardo Munoz Alvarez ALBANY – Ordering e-cigarettes online and selling flavored nicotine vaping products would both be banned under a proposal released Sunday by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. Only registered retailers — not individuals — could order e-cigarettes online, by phone or by mail, under Cuomo’s proposal to the State Legislature. Cuomo would also ban vaping advertising he said is aimed at youths promoting flavors including cotton candy and bubble gum. In addition, the state Health Department would be authorized to ban certain carrier oils used in vaping products that have been blamed for respiratory ailments related to vaping. The measure would mirror a law that already prohibits the sale of traditional tobacco products over the internet, by phone and mail as way to make sure they are properly taxed and not purchased by minors. In November, officials confirmed a second vaping-related ...

Amazon Choice badge recommends unsafe, fake products

The company applies the “Amazon’s Choice” badge to some products that are unsafe, mislabeled and violate its own policies, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found. The label appeared on dozens of products that were banned, didn’t meet safety standards and featured fake safety certifications. It was also applied to controlled substances, like steroids and marijuana products, the Journal reported. In other cases, “Amazon’s Choice” listings were manipulated with specific keywords that would ensure they’d be included in the recommendation engine. The Journal discovered some third-party merchants have developed ways to game the algorithms that help determine which products are featured, by pushing consumers to buy an item, which artificially juiced sales and made it appear more popular. An Amazon spokesperson said the company doesn’t tolerate policy violations, including review abuse, incentivized reviews, counterfeits or unsafe products.  “When deciding to badge a product as Amazon’s Choice, we proactively incorporate a number of factors that are designed to protect customers from those policy violations,”...

Amazon Ring product warning issued by consumer groups after hack

Following a string of highly publicized hacks on Amazon Ring devices, a number of consumer and privacy groups, led by nonprofit advocacy group Fight for the Future, issued a product warning for Ring cameras on Tuesday. The joint warning by groups including the Electronic Privacy Information Center and Mijente asserts that Ring devices are not secure, that they expose personal information like device locations and wifi passwords, and that they’re “easier than ever” to hack and share video without your permission. The most recent incident involved a person who accessed a Ring camera in the room of an 8-year-old Mississippi girl. The stranger was able to view footage of the girl and yell the n-word at her. At one point, he says, “I’m your best friend. I’m Santa Claus. Don’t you want to be my best friend?” This is only the latest controversy for Ring, which has faced criticism over its close relationships with police and its potential use of facial recognition technology. Other similar incidents have happened in Georgia, Connecticut, and Florida; security researchers have also found that Ring devices could allow hackers to steal wifi passwords. Ring did not immediately respond to Vo...

How to use the Shop feature on Instagram to buy products

If you are a frequent Instagram user, chances are you may have noticed some posts in your feed with a small shopping bag icon, tucked in the lower left-hand corner.  This is Instagram’s Shop feature, which includes products offered by hundreds of brands and retailers across the world — and it’s a wise investment from the social media platform.   Analysts told Business Insider that Instagram’s move to shopping will be so successful that it will generate $10 billion in revenue by 2021. Using the Shop feature is easy, too. Any post with a shopping bag icon has a product or products linked to it — just tap on the product name, and you’re taken to the description page where you can save it for later, or buy it now.  Some products are available to purchase without even leaving the app, while others take you to the retailer’s website to finalize the transaction.  Some retailers partner with Instagram to provide a check-out process within the app. Most of those retailers are featured on Instagram’s @shop account.  Instagram’s @shop account features many retailers that have items available for purchase on the app. Meira Gebel/Business Insider 2....
