NODE Mini Server V2: The DIY home server based on a Raspberry Pi

Are you protective about where your data is stored and how it is processed? If so, then something like the NODE Mini Server V2 may be right up your street. The idea behind the home server is to replace remote servers that store your browsing data with those that can be managed and operated by the end-user. The NODE is powered by a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and uses a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD for data storage. Getting the device working will require desoldering some of the ports from the Pi though. Unsurprisingly, there are more parts to the NODE than just a Pi and a HDD/SSD, including a small fan to prevent it from overheating. We have included a full parts list below: The V2 will reportedly work with other single board computers (SBCs) like the ASUS Tinker Board, but the design of the server would require some modifying to accommodate a different board. Currently, the project is DIY, the full build details for which NODE supplies on its website along with source files for the case and PCB designs. However, NODE states that it is “thinking of opening a limited preorder on this, depending on what the response was like”. So, if you are interested in having a Raspberry Pi-based home ...

Proposed carbon manufacturing facility raises concerns – News – recordonline.com

TOWN OF NEW WINDSOR – A newly proposed carbon manufacturing facility on the riverfront has raised concerns from town officials and residents over noise, traffic and odor. Element Carbon Hudson Valley, a company registered under an address in Missouri, has proposed to transform a former soil reclamation processing building located at 1106 River Road into a 27,900-square-foot carbon manufacturing facility. The facility would use low-temperature thermal drying and pyrolysis to process wastewater bio-waste into carbon fertilizer. The particulate and odor emissions from the thermal treatment equipment would be treated through air pollution control systems prior to exhaust to the atmosphere. Bryce Meeker, vice president of the company, said the project would generate a local beneficial use of bio-waste, restore carbon, reduce nutrient runoff into lakes and achieve a negative carbon footprint when he first introduced the project to the town’s Planning Board on Nov. 13. “We eliminate methane, pathogens and odors from bio-waste decomposition that from an ecological perspective is massive. By taking this off the market early and not letting it sit and rot, we avoid massive am...

Engineering stable interfaces for three-dimensional lithium metal anodes

Lithium metal has long been considered one of the most promising anode materials for advanced lithium batteries (for example, Li-S and Li-O2), which could offer significantly improved energy density compared to state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries. Despite decades of intense research efforts, its commercialization remains limited by poor cyclability and safety concerns of lithium metal anodes. One root cause is the parasitic reaction between metallic lithium and the organic liquid electrolyte, resulting in continuous formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interphase, which consumes both active lithium and electrolyte. Until now, it has been challenging to completely shut down the parasitic reaction. We find that a thin-layer coating applied through atomic layer deposition on a hollow carbon host guides lithium deposition inside the hollow carbon sphere and simultaneously prevents electrolyte infiltration by sealing pinholes on the shell of the hollow carbon sphere. By encapsulating lithium inside the stable host, parasitic reactions are prevented, resulting in impressive cycling behavior. We report more than 500 cycles at a high coulombic efficiency of 99% in an ether-base...

The best reusable coffee cups The Telegraph Search Icon Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

While there are signs things may be improving – for example the coffee chain Pret has rolled out a coffee cup recycling scheme in its stores – overall, the majority of takeaway coffee cups still end up as waste. While we think of them as cardboard, a plastic coating complicates the reprocessing. At the same time, a survey last year estimated that Brits drink almost 100 million cups of coffee per day. That’s a lot of coffee. And a lot of cups. One simple way to reduce your footprint is to buy a reusable coffee mug (or travel mug – the same thing by a different name). These tend to cost between £5 and £20, and come in a frankly astonishing range of materials, shapes and sizes. Quite often – though certainly not always – the coffee tastes better than in the cardboard-plastic cups. So there’s no excuse.  Equipping yourself with a reusable travel mug can also save you money in the long term. Last year, the Government began to mull the prospect of a ‘latte levy’, a 25p tax on disposable coffee cup. That may not have been implemented, but several outlets have already instigated their own incentives.  At Pret and Paul, for example, if you bring a disposable coff...

Make-ahead quinoa egg bites make a convenient and quick breakfast

Whether or not you are into making official resolutions, chances are you are shifting toward eating healthier this time of year. A popular and worthy aim is to start the day with a good breakfast. Doing so not only gives you the nourishment you need to fuel your morning, it tends to set the tone for the day. These tasty three-bite egg cups are designed to put those breakfast goals within easy reach, even considering the mad rush reality of weekday mornings. Made in a muffin tin, they are like loaded mini-frittatas, packed with the hearty whole-grain quinoa and colorful sauteed vegetables — including red bell pepper, fresh spinach and mushrooms — and seasoned with savory onion, garlic, smoked paprika and parmesan cheese. Make them up to three days ahead and store in the refrigerator. A quick 60 to 90 seconds in the microwave and these bites are ready, though they’re equally good at room temperature. In an ideal world, you’d sit down at an actual table for five minutes and savor these portable cups, but they can also be eaten on the go if need be as you dash out the door. Heat oven to 375 degrees with the rack in the middle. Line a 12-muffin tin with paper liners. Coa...

Become a better baker with simple science – FlipScience

Picture a baker putting together flour, eggs, oil, and other ingredients to make a cake. Meanwhile, in another part of town, a scientist is in his laboratory, experimenting with samples in test tubes. Surprisingly, these two have more in common than you may realize. After all, in many ways, cooking is a science in itself. Here are a few food science concepts to keep in mind the next time you make baked treats for your family and friends. (Or for yourself — we won’t judge you for being greedy!) Any dessert enthusiast would tell you that a good cake has the right softness and sponginess. Any good baker, on the other hand, would tell you that you can achieve this through the incorporation of air into the batter. This seemingly simple task is done by the use of leaveners. Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) is a commonly used leavener. This alkaline compound reacts with acid, like buttermilk or fruit juice, to produce carbon dioxide. The incorporation of these carbon dioxide bubbles in your cake batter makes for a fluffy cake. However, too much baking soda will result in an off-tasting, bitter cake. This is important to remember when your recipe doesn’t call for an acid, whic...

About five years ago, startup Soraa emerged onto the scene with an invention from a Japanese

About five years ago, startup Soraa emerged onto the scene with an invention from a Japanese LED expert and backing from some of Silicon Valley’s most well-known venture capital firms. This week, after years of building up a business based on selling LED lights for commercial and industrial buildings, the company launched its very first foray into the consumer market at the CES technology expo in Las Vegas. Soraa, which was co-founded by Nobel laureate Shuji Nakamura and funded by Khosla Ventures and NEA, calls the lighting product “helia.” It’s a light bulb and smart controller set that dynamically adjusts lighting to help households sleep better, achieve a more convenient lifestyle, and light a house more efficiently. The light bulbs come in the form of a widely used down light (BR30) and can be screwed into standard sockets at a home or business. To make the lights smart, you need to buy one of the controllers, which pops into the center of one of the lights and contains sensors and a communication chip to enable the lights to connect information over the power line. Each light will set you back $49.99, plus $29 for the controller, and will be on sale starting in the spring o...

Position and unroll the detail strip square to the line of the eaves. Fix by nailing

Position and unroll the detail strip square to the line of the eaves. Fix by nailing top edge of detail strip using 10mm galvanised clout nails. Form the drip edge either dressing into gutter; or nailing to fascia at 5cm centres. Ensure the shingles are positioned square to the line of the eaves and verge. Horizontal shingle tile alignment is created by Interlocking side slots to the edges of the shingles. Vertical shingle tile alignment is created by opening guide slots in the top of the shingle strip into which the next course is engaged. Overlay the detail strip at the eaves with the base course of shingles nailed using 20mm galvanised clout nails, applied in line with the tile tab joint just above the bitumen adhesive strip. (5 fixings per strip) The fixing of the eaves course of roofing tile shingles is completed by applying felt lap adhesive onto the detail strip below the tile tabs to secure them to the detail strip. Lay the shingles diagonally across the roof taking care to keep them square to the line of the eaves and verge. Start shingle tile course with cut lengths to form a broken bond patten. First prepare the joint by cleaning off roof debris. Lift the tile tab an...

Photo Flash: Florida Studio Theatre Presents OUTLAWS AND ANGELS

Due to audience demand, Florida Studio Theatre (FST) announces the extension of Outlaws and Angels, celebrating the “outlaws” of country music and the “angels” who loved them. Now playing through April 12 in FST’s Goldstein Cabaret, Outlaws and Angels features the soundtrack of hard-knock living and homespun storytelling. Brimming with energy and featuring songs from music legends like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash, audiences have called the production “Thoroughly entertaining,” “Amazing,” and “Captivating.” Written by Richard Hopkins and Rebecca Hopkins with arrangements by Jim Prosser, Outlaws and Angels honors musicians who embody country music’s rebellious spirit, such as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Using music as a way to share their own journeys, country artists have been able to connect with audiences on a uniquely personal level. Every night audiences are touched and charmed by such great hits as “Desperado,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Hey Good Lookin.’” “These people, their stories- they’re downright iconic,” said Rosie Webber, who brin...
