My neighbor is an NPR junkie and always has the radio on. Earlier this evening when

My neighbor is an NPR junkie and always has the radio on. Earlier this evening when I was visiting her, I listened in on their podcast. What grabbed my attention were the words “toxic chemical” and “found in 99% of humans’ blood.” I, of course, looked up the podcast and downloaded it to listen to it after the original airing ended in order to get the full story. The podcast was about Dupont’s 20-year legal battle over a toxic chemical used to make Teflon, which is a coating used in cookware. The chemical is called PFOA, which is short for perfluorooctanoic acid — also known as C8 — and it’s used as a material feedstock, and also as an industrial surfactant in chemical processes. Dupont has been sued several times over the past two decades over this. NPR interviewed Robert Bilott, one of the lead attorneys in the earliest cases, because he wrote a book about this toxic chemical and his experiences in the trials. There’s also a movie titled Dark Waters that will be coming out next month based on Robert’s book. It tells the true story how Robert Bilott took down Dupont for poisoning 70,000 people in West Virginia with the chemicals used to make Teflon. Robert describes PFOA as a “...

Buyers Guide: Ice Blade Frames and Conversion Kits for Inline Skates

Winter is in full effect in the northern regions around the world. Where I live, in Vermont, we have had snow on the ground for over a month already. For me to inline skate, I have to drive 2-3 hours to either go to a skatepark in Quebec, New Hampshire or Maine or down to Boston to go trail or urban skating. This is not something I can do often, however, I do have an ice rink down the street from my house and there are dozens of frozen lakes and ponds around me to skate on all winter long. I grew up ice skating and my mom still ice skates twice a week. She always wants me to go with her, but I really cannot stand the lacing system on hockey or figure skates. I just can’t seem to get them tight enough and after a while they just hurt my feet. I’ve long dreamed of how fun it would be to skate on my, much more comfortable, inline skate boots with ice blades on them. That dream is now a reality with a wide range of ice frames and ice blade conversions kits available for most kinds of inline skates. We have put together a list of current frames and blades on the market. Hopefully this guide can help you pick the right frame to put on your favorite boots and enjoy winter skating with ...

Using the Shop feature is easy, too. Any post with a shopping bag icon has a product or products linked to it — just tap on the product name, and you’re taken to the description page where you can save it for later, or buy it now.  Some products are available to purchase without even leaving the app, while others take you to the retailer’s website to finalize the transaction.  Some retailers partner with Instagram to provide a check-out process within the app. Most of those retailers are featured on Instagram’s @shop account.  Instagram’s @shop account features many retailers that have items available for purchase on the app. Meira Gebel/Business Insider 2....

Helion’s line of affordable RTRs has been joined by another 1/12 scale entry with the Contakt

Helion’s line of affordable RTRs has been joined by another 1/12 scale entry with the Contakt 12TR, which dresses a 2WD platform with truggy styling. Just like the other 1/12 scale cars in their lineup, the Contakt packs a lot of value into a small package at a low price. A 2.4GHz radio system controls a water-resistant electronics package, and there’s no skimping on the included battery; it’s a high-capacity (for its size) LiPo, and there’s even a balance charger and charging bag included. All you need to add are four AA batteries, and the Contakt is ready to go directly from box to back yard. BEHIND THE WHEEL It didn’t take long to get the Contakt out of the box and ready for action. The partially charged LiPo battery only took about a half hour before it was fully charged with the included charger. Once the Contakt was ready to go, I put it down on the tarmac and ripped on the throttle and it took off with authority. The Contakt has strong acceleration, especially on high-traction surfaces. Top speed is a GPS-confirmed 18.3mph, and it was easy to pop wheelies by rolling backward with reverse then blasting full throttle. The Contakt’s tires have lots of grip on asphalt and it ...

NINE animal activists have been cut from equipment and charged after they chained themselves to a conveyor inside an abattoir at Goulburn, NSW. It is alleged three men and six women, aged between 21 and 61, entered the abattoir on Mazamat Road about 2.30am this morning. Ulmer: Lost and waiting on the weather | Columnists

Here we are once again wondering where we’re going and as both my loyal readers know we won’t know where that is until we get there. So here goes. Winter seems to be trying to nudge fall out of the way and those of us still out in the wilds of Tschida aren’t happy about it. The problem is the weather doesn’t seem to care about our desires but as you know that’s never stopped us locals from complaining about it. So much for the weather … onto other things. As you can imagine most folks along Fisherman’s Way are in the process of unsummering their cabins. To accomplish this task a cabin owner has two choices: So we’ve been wearing our hoodies for the last couple weeks but much to our local meteorological prognosticators chagrin, we’ve also had to keep our rain jackets handy. A week ago we got 5 inches of rain and it sure hasn’t slowed up much since then. Since it’s still raining we haven’t much else to talk about other than how the rain interferes with normal fall activities, like fishing. For the record, my guide from the “Get a Guide Agency” has not been able to guide me to the hot spots because the weather hasn’t held up long enough, and therefore it has limit...

Interiors by Joanna Wood, Maddux Creative & Cave Interiors

‘Can you imagine all of the people who have lived, worked, sat, loved, laughed, cried and sobbed on all of these things? I think it’s wonderful.’ Joanna Wood has been at Christie’s since 8am, one of a trio of designers, along with Maddux Creative and Cave Interiors, selected to style a room using pieces from our Interiors sales. The participants are all prominent members of The List, House & Garden magazine’s online directory of leading design professionals. Each had just nine hours to put their room set together, working with a careful selection of pieces that reflect their unique style — from a needlework sofa to glass accessories, and even a parrot. ‘This sofa was the whole reason for this set,’ comments Georgina Cave of Cave Interiors, describing how she ‘fell in love’ with the object and built her room around it. As a rhinoceros head is moved into place, the designers reflect on their work with an ‘Aladdin’s cave’ of art and objects. ‘I think we’re looking pretty good,’ says Joanna. Browse our regular Living with Art sales in New York, and our Interiors sales in Paris and at Christie’s South Kensington in London to see what you would differently, and to find inspiration...
